About 2MX2

2MX2 is an Alternative/Moombahton Hip Hop group out of Colorado. They are well known for their modern renditions of traditional Latin music as well as their focus on political topics such as immigration, health, education reform, and other important matters of our times. The band consists of members Owen Trujillo who was born in Zacatecas Mexico, and Denver native, Juice ET Hugo. Both members are bilingual emcees with a passion for conscious lyrics. Although both emcees have had their own unique struggles, they are not afraid to share their experiences with their listeners. Owen Trujillo an “illegal immigrant” who came to the United States as a child to save his younger brothers life, often speaks about his struggle growing up in a society that fostered cultural shame.  Although Hugo, a health advocate and a cancer survivor was born a citizen of the United States, he also struggled with immigration issues when he was separated from his father due to immigration laws. This dynamic duo strives to inspire through their music by sharing their personal stories with the intention of empowering their audience to a rhythm that will make you dance.

What does 2MX2 mean?

“2.M.X.2” stands for two Mexica’s, (Meh-shee-kah). Mexica is a Nahuatl word for the indigenous people of the Valley of Mexico known today as the rulers of the Aztec Empire. The two Aztec cities that were founded by the Mexica were Tenochtitlan & Talatelolco; these two cities eventually became one (like the two emcees in the group – Owen & Juice).
The word Mexica is in the language we spoke before our ancestors were conquered; it is symbolic to taking back our story. The 2 Mexica’s Owen Trujillo & Juice E.T. Hugo are here to represent the dualistic reality of two ancient empires, two histories, two languages, and two individuals that share a message of unity through their music.
Understanding the challenges that need to be overcome when facing our modern day conquistadors who take many forms (corporations, the food industry, politics, etc.) is key to changing our future. It often seems that we are bystanders to a story that repeats itself, but we are living proof that we can change our future by learning from our past.2.M.X.2. is the second coming of our ancestors who are here to rewrite their story through rhythm & poetry (Rap).

The 2MX2 Ollin

The symbol is a derivative of the “Ollin” found in the center of the Aztec calendar, which depicts Tonatiuh the sun god. We chose to remove the skin on our Ollin to point out that beneath the skin and culture we are all human, and that the sun is a symbol of what humanity is capable of. As the years went on we began to learn more about the “Ollin” coming to the realization that we did not chose this symbol but rather it chose us.
